SEOUL, Feb. 29 (Yonhap) -- Director Denis Villeneuve's SF film "Dune: Part 2" (hereinafter referred to as "Dune 2") started at 2nd place at the box office on its opening day, unable to surpass the success of "Exhuma" which is dominating the box office.

According to the integrated cinema ticket network on the 29th, "Dune 2" gathered over 152,000 viewers (occupying 27.7% of the total sales) on the day before its release, securing the 2nd place at the box office.

"Dune 2" is a sequel to the 2021 film "Dune," starring top Hollywood stars such as Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya.

With its unique visual effects and action scenes based on a distinctive worldview, the film attracted the attention of "Dune" enthusiasts, with early sold-out screenings at CGV IMAX theaters, drawing interest from the so-called "Dunekins" (a term referring to "Dune" fans).

Although "Dune 2" competed fiercely with the occult film "Exhuma" in terms of pre-sales rankings, "Exhuma" has gained the upper hand for now.

"Exhuma" maintained its position at the top of the box office for the 7th consecutive day, drawing over 384,000 viewers (59.0%) the day before.

The cumulative number of viewers has exceeded 3.31 million, surpassing the break-even point of 3.3 million viewers.

Both "Exhuma" and "Dune 2" are expected to continue to attract audiences to theaters during the upcoming three-day holiday weekend from the 1st to the 3rd of next month.

As of 8 a.m. on this day, the number of advance ticket sales for "Exhuma" and "Dune 2" was approximately 429,000 and 262,000, respectively.
