SEOUL, Oct. 19 (Yonhap) -- The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Craft & Design Foundation said Monday they will hold "2026 Hanbok Culture Week" at major venues in Korea and abroad from Oct. 19-25.
Hanbok Culture Week is an annual event centered around Oct. 21, Hanbok Day, featuring a variety of hanbok-related programs, including exhibitions, hands-on activities and fashion shows, to promote hanbok culture in everyday life.
In its ninth year, this year's event will feature various programs at around 410 venues in Korea and abroad, including the National Museum of Korea and Gyeongbok Palace.
On Hanbok Day on Oct. 21, a ceremony commemorating Hanbok Culture Week will be held at the open plaza of the National Museum of Korea, featuring an awards ceremony honoring contributors to hanbok culture, a hanbok fashion show and celebratory performances.
At the awards ceremony, Kwon Young-sook, professor emeritus at Pusan National University, will receive the Hanbok Culture Contribution Award; Lee Hye-mi, CEO of Saimdang by, will receive the Hanbok Person of the Year Award; and Jung Hye-jin, CEO of Songhwa by Jung, will receive the Young Hanbok Designer Award.
The Korea Human Resources Development Service of Korea will receive the award for the institution with the most extensive adoption of hanbok as work uniforms, while designer Kim So-yeon will receive the grand prize in the Hanbok Design Project Competition.
A hanbok fashion show featuring five hanbok brands will also be held, along with celebratory performances by Kim Yoon-a, vocalist of rock band Jaurim, and other artists.
Special benefits have also been prepared for visitors wearing hanbok at venues across the country. Lotte World and Seoul Sky will offer 50 percent and 35 percent discounts, respectively, on admission to visitors wearing hanbok through Oct. 31.
The National Gugak Center will also offer a 50 percent discount on admission to its Saturday Masterpiece Concert on Oct. 24. Other cultural and arts institutions, tourism sites and leisure facilities nationwide will offer a variety of benefits, including admission discounts, free entry, hands-on programs and special events.
Various hanbok programs, including hanbok-wearing experiences and lessons on hanbok etiquette, will also be held at major overseas locations in countries including Canada, Japan and Denmark.
"Hanbok is a precious cultural heritage that has been part of our lives for a long time and a cultural asset that continues to evolve in new forms today," Culture Minister Choi Hwi-young said. "I hope Hanbok Culture Week will provide an opportunity to reflect on the efforts of hanbok practitioners who have preserved the tradition of hanbok and encourage more people to wear and enjoy hanbok in their daily lives."
Detailed information on the events is available on the official Hanbok Culture Week website.
