SEOUL, Oct. 7 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Jae Myung on Wednesday stressed the need for South Korea to become a global leader in green transformation, calling it a key strategy to strengthen the country's competitiveness and better address the climate crisis.
Lee made the remark during a meeting outlining the government's Korea Green Transformation (K-GX) strategy in Seoul, pointing out that the climate crisis is "no longer a concern of the distant future but a reality threatening the survival of mankind."
"The green transformation is a key strategy for the future to secure global competitiveness while protecting people's lives and livelihoods from the climate crisis," Lee said.
He emphasized that securing a leading position in the green market is essential to maintaining Seoul's edge in high-tech industries and ensuring the success of the government's "three megaprojects" initiative, which calls for a national transformation driven by semiconductors, physical artificial intelligence (AI) and AI data centers.
"We must break away from the practice of following others and become the architects and leaders that shape the green market," he said.
Participants at the meeting included SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won, who also heads the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and officials from Hanwha Qcells, POSCO Holdings, Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc.
The green transformation strategy was one of three visions under what the president described as a "K-Initiative" in his address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York last month.
In his speech, Lee pledged to transform the country's industrial structure under the green transition strategy to turn carbon neutrality into a new growth engine and create more job opportunities.
