SEOUL, July 30 (Yonhap) -- Director Hwang Wook has been awarded the Best Director prize in the Cheval Noir competition at the 28th Fantasia International Film Festival for his comedy film 'Mashville,' as announced by the production company Kitsch Productions on the 29th.

Director Hwang expressed his gratitude, saying, "Despite many challenges, it was a joy to film this project. I'm thrilled that the humor resonated, and I sincerely thank the actors."

'Mashville' tells the story of a lawless village overrun by members of a cult who are trying to perform a ritual using twelve corpses, and the ensuing chaos as people with different agendas converge. The production company reported that the film was well-received for its fresh blend of western, action, and comedy genres.

Held annually in Montreal, Canada, the Fantasia International Film Festival is the largest genre film festival in North America. Last year, the audience award was given to 'The Outlaws 3,' starring Ma Dong-seok. Previous Korean films that have been invited to compete include 'A Taxi Driver' (2017), 'The Witch' (2018), 'Idol' (2019), and 'The Devil's Deal' (2023).

This year, the festival also recognized the short film 'Night Fishing,' co-produced by actor Son Suk-ku and Hyundai Motor Company, with the Best Editing Award in the international short film competition.
