SEOUL, December 6 (Yonhap) -- "Nicole Kidman, who played Satine in the movie Moulin Rouge, was breathtakingly beautiful. But in the musical, Satine is likely to be portrayed as a stronger woman. As a woman who has been at the top of the career as a singer and experienced all the hardships, she is more powerful and responsible than naive." (Kim Ji-woo)
The musical "Moulin Rouge!" which swept the Tony Award will be held in Korea for the first time in Asia on December 20. Based on a film of the same name starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, "Moulin Rouge!" depicts the love story of singer Satine and young composer Christian of the colorful club Moulin Rouge in Paris.
IVY and Kim Ji-woo, who will be on stage as Satine, expressed confidence in an interview at a cafe in Gangnam-gu, Seoul on November 5, saying, "It is the best work in not only dazzling shows but also dramas and emotions that can be sympathized with men and women of all ages."
"Moulin Rouge!" which was premiered in New York Broadway in 2019 has won ten crowns including the grand prize for best piece and producer with more than 70 re composed pop-songs.
In particular, the image of the main character Satine who is became more independent and stronger than the movie gets comments that it follows the current generation.
Kim Ji-woo explained, "Satine in the musical does not show her weakness but instead shows more of her strong effort to protect her club Moulin Rounge and her family."
"I was startled to see Satine, who became stronger than the movie when I watched the musical in Broadway in 2019. After getting the character, I immediately understood the director's explanation that "We analyzed that Satine, who was in the top position as a singer and went through all the hardships, is impossible to be just pure and innocent." IVY said, "The movie and the musical have some different contents," and added, "The drama will show more of the responsibility and the stronger side of Satine saving club Moulin Rounge going under financial risk."
The two actresses were selected as Satine from the audition which took seven months starting from November of last year.
Kim Ji-woo said, "This was the hardest audition I had through my whole life," and added, "I do not even know how many times I had to go meet these people again as I had to communicate with the creators in real time and show them various settings."
She continued, "I cried a lot after getting the call that I was selected," and said "I still cannot believe that I got the character."
IVY also said, "I applied for the audition with courage thinking I should try even though I might not make it," "I think it is such a miracle and luck that I was selected as this character."
"Moulin Rouge!," which received not only the best picture and best director but also the stage design, costume design, and lighting design awards at the Tony Awards last year, catches the eyes of the audience with its colorful and beautiful stage and costumes.
The two actresses put a lot of effort for Satine's costume, the best star in the play, by going to Australia and fitting outfits with the local costume team.
IVY said, "The 16 outfits worn by Satine were all made by different designers," and explained, "Since it was impossible for all the 16 designers to come to Korea, we went there and worked on the costume fitting with the designer's hands."
Actors and actresses on stage overwhelm the audience with colorful lights that are difficult to keep their eyes opened starting from the opening of the performance.
Kim Ji-woo said, "Using this word currently trending, we 'tear' the stage from the opening," adding, "Even during practice, the actors who were watching from the audience unconsciously stood up and clapped."
IVY laughed, saying, "It's a musical that made me feel the power of capitalism."
"This musical is extremely gorgeous and pretty to the extent that it is surprising to see such a work coming up in Korea. I have played in several licensed works from abroad but this is the first piece with so many lights and stage equipment. It smells like money.(Laugh)"
The rearranged music produced out of songs of singers loved around the world, including Madonna, Elton John, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, and Adele, is pleasing to the ears.
Regarding concerns that the translated English lyrics of the original song may be somewhat awkward for the audience, he stressed, "A lot of effort was put in the translation, and the music itself blends in well with the drama so you can enjoy it without any worries."
Kim Ji-woo said, "It might be unfamiliar as a music as these songs are more familiar to English-speakers, but the song and the story line goes well, so the audience will feel that it is a well-made performance without worrying about this."
