LOS ANGELES, Mar. 22 (Yonhap) – Steven Spielberg, Hollywood’s best known film director of all time, praised the Netflix Korean drama “Squid Game” as a show that completely changed the math for Hollywood casting centered on American movie stars.
Spielberg said on a PGA Awards panel on Mar. 19(U.S. Time), according to a film industry IndieWire on Mar. 21.
He praised, “Squid Game comes along and changes the math entirely for all of us.”
Spielberg also mentioned, “A long time ago it was domestic stars that brought the audience into movies,” adding, “Today, it’s interesting, unknown people can star entire miniseries, can be in movies.”
Then, the director pointed to Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos, who was sitting in the audience, and thanked him.
IndieWire reported that he applauded “Squid Game” for taking a chance on a series and achieving a swift success without any known stars.
Deadline added, “Steven Spielberg cited the smash hit Netflix Korean drama ‘Squid Game’ as a ‘game changer’ for the industry.”
