SEOUL, Dec. 16 (Yonhap) -- The beloved animated series "Run Hany," which captivated children in the 1980s and 1990s, is making its comeback with its first-ever theatrical film next year, 40 years after its debut.

Distribution company NEW announced on Monday that the animation film, tentatively titled "Bad Girl: Run Hany," will be released sometime next year.

This movie, created to mark the 40th anniversary of Run Hany, will feature Hany, now a high school track athlete, facing off against her rival, Na Ae-ri. The film promises an original narrative that has never been seen in the original comic or TV animation.

The film is the debut work of the animation studio Playcan, with director Heo Jeong-su at the helm. Run Hany was originally serialized in Treasure Island magazine from January 1985 to June 1987 by writer Lee Jin-ju, totaling 30 episodes. It was later adapted into a popular TV animation in 1988, which garnered widespread attention.

The story follows the determined Hany, who, after losing her mother, lives alone in a rooftop apartment. Upon entering middle school, she meets her teacher Hong Dookkae and begins to nurture her dream of becoming a track athlete.

The series touched the hearts of many viewers with its inspiring narrative. The iconic theme song, "Run, run, run, Hany, / To the end of this world, / Run, Hany," became a hit during the time.
