SEOUL, May 10 (Yonhap) -- A posthumous film of top actor Lee Sun-kyun will meet audiences in August, distributor said on the 10th.
The film, tentatively titled "Land of Happiness," co-stars the late actor and Jo Jung-suk and is set to be released in August this year, according to distribution company NEW.
The film is based on the 10.26 Incident when President Park Chung-hee was assassinated in 1979. It tells the story of soldier Park Tae-joo (played by Lee Sun-kyun) and his defense attorney Jung In-hoo (played by Cho Jung-seok) standing at a crossroads of life and death during the trial for the presidential assassination.
Lee Sun-kyun portrayed a principled soldier at the center of the incident that shook modern Korean history, while Cho Jung-seok played the defense attorney who fought to save him. Actor Yoo Jae-myung took on the role of the key figure in the incident, Jeon Sang-doo.
Directed by Choo Chang-min, who directed the film "Masquerade" (2012), which attracted 12.32 million viewers, "Land of Happiness" is his latest work.
Although there was uncertainty about the release of "Land of Happiness" due to Lee Sun-kyun's sudden passing after the filming was completed in 2022, it has been decided to release it this summer, during the peak season.
Another final work of Lee Sun-kyun, "Project Silence," is also under consideration for release this year.
"Project Silence" depicts the story of people isolated on an airport bridge in a disaster film, with Lee Sun-kyun playing a Blue House administrator striving to resolve the situation. Directed by Kim Tae-gon, the film was invited to the Midnight Screening section of the 76th Cannes International Film Festival last year.
