SEOUL, Nov. 16 (Yonhap) --Veteran actor Lee Sung-min met his another best character playing as veteran detective in Disney+ new Korean original series "Shadow Detective."
Lead roles of the series, Lee Sung-min and Lee Hak-joo met with Yonhap News Agency on Tuesday at a cafe in Samcheong-dong.
The crime suspense series, which is coming out in order since Oct. 26, revolves around detective Kim Taek-rok, who receives a phone call from a mysterious man and suddenly becomes the prime suspect of his co-worker's murder case, digging his past to to catch mysterious Park-beom.
Lee changed into Taerok and led the scene by maintaining a sense of tension with a friend of blackmailer who claims himself to be "friend." Taerok is a detective who is on the brink of retirement but has animal instinct when it comes to investigation.
Lee said, "I thought Taerok is someone who has natural talent as detective," adding, "He looks around the surroundings instinctively, has good memory, and keen. He is humane."
He also said, "Taerok finishes his case with no room for error, but ironically, that is also the reason why he got involved into such case."
Lee said the character of Taerok was at first overwhelming. He had trouble setting up the character because he was neither a hot-blooded detective nor an old man who has no passion."
The actor said, "The original name of the series was 'Old Detective,'" adding, "'Old' part gave me a lot of pressure. It would have been easy if the role was old man like the movie 'Remember,'but it was hard since I had to look a little older than my current age and be a man of dignity."
He continued, "I focused more on showing who Taerok is than his job as detective," adding, " I looked over the papers staffs gave me many times since this was my first time playing a role with panic disorder."
As the story unfolds, Taerok faces himself in the past. Memories like missing out the cries of other victims due to busy chasing a criminal and choosing expedient method for a fast investigation came back to him like a boomerang.
"When I first looked into the work, the story of old detective drawing out his past cases and organizing them was very interesting to me. Taerok feels pain looking back on his past mistakes that 'friend' brings up. This kind is also the charm of Taerok."
Lee mentioned that the main attraction of this series is that while Taerok tries to figure out the identity of blackmailer 'friend,' he makes everyone suspicious.
Lee said, "Every time a new character appears, they come under suspicion as 'friend.'" adding, "The charm of this drama is that everyone acts thinking that 'I can be a criminal.' I acted out thinking that even Taerok could be the one."
Detective Son Gyeong-chan, who Lee Hak-joo plays, is one of the character being held as a 'friend.' Son is a detective who respects Taerok so much that he came all the way from Geum-o police station to Seoul to work with him.
Lee Hak-joo said, "'Since I play a role who people have to suspect as 'friend,' I acted questionably since the first episode so that other characters become suspicious of me," adding, " I do get a order from chief officer (to Guem-o police station), but I tried to make those secretive things to send mixed messages that I could be the friend."
Lee Sung-min and Lee Hak-joo, above all, showed most satisfaction at the impressiveness of the series.
Lee Sung-min said, "The story has a density," adding, "Since Over-The-Top dramas began to appear, the viewing time, which were around 50-70 minutes in the past, decreased, and story unfolds based on the cases, increasing the level of immersion."
Lee Hak-joo said, "You will be absorbed into the series by the games mysterious friends brings to the table."
Episodes 7 and 8 of eight-episode series "Shadow Detective" will be released on Wednesday.
