SEOUL, Mar. 29 (Yonhap) -- South Korean-made 15-minute-long nine-part short-form series “Nine Times Fired,” which is a reproduction of the original independent film of the same name, has been invited to the Cannes International Series Festival in France.

“Our short-form series ‘Nine Times Fired’ has been invited to the 6th Cannes International Series Festival that will be held in April during which Korean OTT web series will be introduced,” director Hyeon Hae-ri, who took the helm of the series, shared in her social space Tuesday.

The Cannes’ “Korea Focus,” hosted by the South Korean Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT), and organized by the Korea Broadcasting and Communication Agency (KCA), will be held with the aim of supporting the overseas distribution and export of Korean-made over-the-top (OTT) content. The event consists of a showcase session and a screening session.

From Apr. 17 to 19, the production crew of this riveting series will be presenting content IP (Intellectual Property) and overseas distribution strategies to diverse domestic and overseas OTT platform companies, production houses, investors, and potential buyers in Cannes, France.

The black comedy series shed light on the dismal challenges that the economic aggravation in 2023 brought upon the struggling youth. It tells the story of a job seeker, who is supposed to be enjoying the springtime of her life, trying not to lose her resolution to get a job. She keeps attempting to secure a job for herself despite repeated layoffs and discouraging contract expirations.

“I have come across many friends who are in search of a job,” said the 25-year-old budding director Na Han-seo, who co-directed the series, while explaining the background of the production. “I tried to capture the struggles of the youth in our generation as realistically as possible based on stories I heard from my friends while drinking.”
