SEOUL, May 22 (Yonhap) -- Disney’s live-action film "Lilo & Stitch" opened at No. 2 at the South Korean box office, surpassing director Hwang Byung-kook’s Korean drama "Yadang."

According to data from the Korean Film Council's box office tracking system on Thursday, "Lilo & Stitch," directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, drew about 18,000 moviegoers on its opening day Tuesday, accounting for an 11.3 percent share of the daily box office.

The film is based on the 2002 animated movie of the same name and follows the story of Stitch, a mischievous alien who crash-lands in Hawaii and forms a bond with a lonely girl named Lilo (played by Maia Kealoha).

The film has been receiving generally positive reviews, scoring 96 percent on CGV’s Golden Egg Index, which reflects real-time audience ratings. The film was praised for its realistic portrayal of the popular Disney character Stitch and its well-balanced mix of humor and emotion.

Despite the new release, "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning" ("Mission: Impossible 8"), starring Tom Cruise, maintained its top position at the box office with around 96,000 moviegoers and a 61.2 percent market share. However, it was the first weekday since the film’s release that its daily audience dropped below 100,000.

"Yadang," the highest-grossing Korean film of the year so far, slipped to third place, drawing an additional 12,000 viewers and bringing its cumulative total to approximately 3.24 million.
