SEOUL, August 12 (Yonhap) --The city of Miryang, Gyeongnam announced on Friday that it will be holding a public event for the local intangible cultural heritage and the Miryang Baekjung Festival on August 13.

It will be held in the bank of the Miryang River in Sanmun-dong, Miryang city.

6 national intangible cultural property from Miryang and the Yeongnam area, Korean Traditional Percussion Band's Touring Shaman Ritual for Prosperity of the Village, Gyeongnam Goseong ogwangdae, Yecheon Tongmyeong Nongyo (Farmers' Song of Tongmyeong, Yecheon), which includes Miryang Baekjung Nori, Gamnae Gejuldanggigi (variation of tug-of-war that has been passed down in Gamcheon-ri), Beobheung Sangwon Nori and many more, will be on stage.

Miryang Baekjung Nori originated from the fact that people took a break from farming and shared food and alcohol to have fun on "Baekjung," July 15 on the lunar calendar.

Gamnae Gejuldanggigi originated from the local residents who used to fight among others for a good spot catching the crabs, while Beobheung Sangwon Nori is a game where people gather in the front yard of Dangsan tree during the Jeongwol Daeboreum (fifteenth day of the lunar calendar) to pray for peace and prosperity for the village and family.

If it rains, Miryang city will be changing the venue to the Miryang Arirang Art Center and hold the event there.
