SEOUL, Feb. 7 (Yonhap) -- South Korean actor Song Joong-ki, who recently received the worldwide spotlight for his lead role in “Reborn Rich,” will now be playing the role of a North Korean defector.

The actor will be starring in the forthcoming film “Ro Ki Wan,” Netflix confirmed Tuesday. The film will tell the love story of a North Korean defector who escaped to Belgium with his last hope and a woman who lost her reason for living.

Song will play Ro Ki-wan, a North Korean defector who struggles to be granted refugee status in Belgium. Choi Sung-eun, who is best known for her role in the Netflix original drama series “The Sound of Music,” will play Ma-ri, a former shooter of Belgian nationality.

An array of veteran actors is also expected to enrich every scene of the film: Kim Sung-ryung will play Ro Ki-wan’s mother Ok-hee; Jo Han-chul and Lee Il-hwa will play Ma-ri’s parents Yoon-seong and Jeong-ju. Lee Sang-hee and Seo Hyun-woo will also appear in this upcoming romance film.

Director Kim Hee-jin, who is previously known for delivering “A Brand New Journey” (2010), “Villa Triste” (2012), “MJ” (2013), and “Our Neighborhood Story” (2014), will be in charge of producing the film.
