SEOUL November 15 (Yonhap) -- In 2020 our society has been drawn into a grave shock due to Baksabang and Nth room, infamous Telegram-based sex abuse rings that shocked the country, the majority of the content creators and users were populated in the general age demographic of teenagers to in their mid twenties, some of them were underage users.
Some of the people who were behind the regime of such digital crime who had their identity officially reviled by the government had the common look. Although the crime was aimed towards making more money, however, despite of economical benefit, some of the members participated in order to satisfy their interest and for fun which shocked the public.
Some of the victims who have lost their friends, family, lover and more due to the crime gave up on their lives due to the shock and fear it haunts them till this day.
South Korean movie “The Distributors” is a movie about a digital sex abuse just like the Nth Room Case. In a society where majority of the people are never free of their mobile phones, the crime thriller movie shows how some of the accidental photos or videos that one took can lead them to an eternal doom.
Character Do Yoo-bin acted by Park Sung-hoon, who will be getting married in near future and his friend Gong Sang-beom, acted by Song Jin-woo visits a club and blacks out, later on both of the characters wake up with not only empty memory of their night but their phones as well.
Yoo-bin, who seems to have managed to adjust himself back to his daily life as a teacher, one day he receives a call from a unknown caller. He receives a threat stating, unless he brings a certain amount of money, videos within his phone will be released to the public. Yoo-bin and Sang-beom who is terrified after receiving the call starts to track down the unknown caller.
Throughout the emotional challenges Yoo-bin goes through every day, the movie portrays what the victims of digital crimes might have gone through every day. The uncertainty of when the caller will call, and the possibility that the criminals will release the video whenever they want if one decides to go against brings down to the terrifying situation of the victim.
The movie doesn’t stop at recreating the digital sex abuse, instead it showcases numbers of twist to maintain the tension of the thriller movie.
South Korean movie “The Distributors” is a screen debut piece of the producer from KBS Hong Seok-gu who is known for his programs “Homemade Love Story,” “My Only One,” and more.
“Throughout the screening of the movie, I was watching the final product with trembling heart.” adding “Throughout the production I have focused on to the idea that anyone with a phone can be subject to such crime.” addressed director Hong Seok-gu during the press conference held on November 14.
Moreover, director addressed “Digital environment does provide wide and infinite space of development for each individuals, however, it can also work as a place which provides grave danger to its users.”
Actor Park Sung-hoon who acted out protagonist Do Yoo-bin addressed “The movie ‘The Distributors’ is a movie which will make you think once again, whether you have a deep understanding and awareness regarding digital crime or not or even to those who create illegal videos or distribute them.”
The Movie “The Distributors” will premiere on November 23, and it will have a runtime of 101 minutes.
