SEOUL, June 19 (Yonhap) -- Star writer Hong Sisters' (Hong Jung-Eun, Hong Mi-Ran) new drama “Alchemy of Souls” started with a rating of 5.2%.

According to Nielsen Korea, a ratings research company on Sunday, the first episode of tvN's weekend drama “Alchemy of Souls,” which aired at 9:10 p.m. the day before, had an audience rating of 5.2% (pay-TV households).

“Alchemy of Souls” is the story of the people whose fate twisted due to “hwanhosool” (the soul of the dead returning to the living) in a fictional country called Daeho.

In the first episode, the confrontation between Park Jin (Yu Jun-sang), the head of the corporate Song-rim and Nak-su (Go Yun-jeong) had a fight, and Nak-su, who was running away with a wound, got into the body of a country girl, Mudeok (Jeon So-min).

Afterwards, the story of Jang-wook (Lee Jae-wook) of the Jang family who was looking for a teacher to teach him how to use magic was drawn. Jang-wook is a person with a secret of birth, and had the gates blocked due to his father's instructions. While the magicians refuse to train him, Jang-wook chooses Mudeok with Naksu’s soul as he realizes Naksu’s abilities.

"Alchemy of Souls” which stands for a complex genre, showed a variety of charms from the first episode.

The scene of magic, with huge black smoke rising in lumps and lightning hitting the sky, created a fantasy world with colorful computer graphics (CG). The scene where Park Jin and Naksu fought also gave off the atmosphere of a martial arts movie.

Along with this, Jang-wook of Daeho and the weak-hearted Mudeok, who has the spirit of Naksu, fought with each other since the first meeting, and created a chemistry (compatibility) like a romantic comedy. This softened the tension and gave excitement and laughter.

The stable performances of actors including Jung So-min, Yu Jun-sang, and Lee Jae-wook enhanced the immersion of the drama by making the fantasy material which is far from reality a little bit more realistic.

On the other hand, the SBS Friday-Saturday drama “Why Her?,” which started earlier than “Alchemy of Souls” recorded a viewer rating of 8.8% while the MBC Friday-Saturday drama “Doctor Lawyer” starring So Ji-sub recorded 6.9%. The JTBC weekend drama “Cleaning Up” starring Yeom Jung-ah recorded 2%.
