SEOUL March 8 (Yonhap) -- “The upcoming stage will not only feature various potentials of individual performers but also acknowledge the traditions of Ballet created 180 years ago which will showcase fine performance of French Ballet.”
Paris Opera Ballet which is well known for their representation of being one of the best in the world with 350 years of history, and significant figure of romantic era of ballet will be revisiting South Korea with “Giselle” in 30 years.
Paris Opera Ballet which successfully finished their performance on March 3 and 4 in Daejeon, will be hosting a show at LG Art Center Seoul on March 8 through 11.
Throughout the press conference held at the LG Art Center Seoul, art director Jose Martinez of Paris Opera Ballet addressed “The upcoming show ‘Giselle’ is a program which withholds the balance between technology and emotions therefore its is considered to be one of the programs that will showcase the aspects of French ballet the best.”
Paris Opera Ballet will be returning to South Korea with the show “Giselle” in 30 years since they last performed in Sejong Center in 1993.
The art director of Paris Opera Ballet, Jose Martinez participated in a show that was held in South Korea 30 years ago as a performer, therefore he has a special connection with South Korean audiences.
“From a performer to a director I have been awarded with an opportunity to visit South Korea, therefore this means a lot to me.” addressed Jose Martinez who has been appointed as a new art director of the Paris Opera Ballet in December of 2022.
Paris Opera Ballet which started off its history in 1669 continues to perform over 200 shows in Paris receiving love from not only French people but throughout the world.
For the upcoming show, over 70 of the performers within Paris Opera Ballet and various staff members such as team doctor, stage crew and more in total of over 120 people will visit to recreate the experience.
Director Jose Martinez addressed “It is very hard for use to go abroad due to fully packed schedules which incorporates over 200 shows in Paris only,” adding “The upcoming show in South Korea will feature every staff members to create the perfect scene for the best in theater experience for ‘Giselle.’”
Currently three of the South Korean performers are performing as a member of Paris Opera Ballet, starting with, the first South Korean performer to have received the title of étoile, a principal dancer within the crew, Park Sae-eun, followed by Kang Hoh-hyun and Yun Seo-hoo.
Kang Hoh-hyun who will be participating as a performer at the upcoming show in South Korea addressed “I am grateful to have been awarded with an opportunity to perform at a show being held in South Korea as a Korean performer,” adding “I hope one day there will be an opportunity for all three South Korean members to be able to perform in South Korea.”
According to the art director Jose Martinez, the mixture of cultures is what keeps the Paris Opera Ballet enriches the history of the group.
“Due to South Korea’s well developed educational scene regarding Ballet, we are able to work with some of Korean performers, Paris Opera Ballet considers the traditional aspect to be the most important factor, however the well developed unique interpretation of tradition helps us to become renewed version of our tradition of our group.” addressed Jose Martinez throughout the press conference.
The upcoming show “Giselle” will be performed by head liners of the Paris Opera Ballet and rising stars of the group.
Main dancer of the upcoming show on March 11 is Dorothee Gilbert who joined the Paris Opera Ballet in 2000 and performed as one of the headliners of the group for the past 23 years.
Dorothee Gilbert who visited South Korea for Paris Opera Ballet’s gala concert and Ballerino Kim Ki-min’s performance in Korea, addressed “Paris Opera Ballet’s act of ‘Giselle’ requires highly skilled techniques therefore it is very different from just regular ballet performances.”
For the male protagonist, rising star Guillaume Diop who is a 23 year old ballerino of Paris Opera Ballet will perform in South Korea alongside Dorothee Gilbert.
