SEOUL, Feb. 17(Yonhap) – S. Korean film director Hong Sang-soo’s 27th feature film "The Novelist's Film," which won the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival on Feb. 16(KST), is a black and white movie filmed in Seoul for 2 weeks last spring.

Director Hong was asked why he made it into a black and white film at the winner's press conference after the film festival, but answered, "I asked myself why, but I’m not sure about the reason."

He said, "I like black and white films like many other people, but because I tend to rely too much on the fact that they are black and white movies as an audience, I became careful and I discarded the method for a while and stopped filming as much as I wanted."

The director added, "I stopped paying attention to it for the past few years. Something had changed inside of me, and I started filming it when I had a chance. When I thought of the mood of this movie, black and white was appropriate, and I wanted it to change into colors in the last scene, even though it was a little too formal.”

Among the 7 winners in major categories, including the Golden Bear for Best Film, Silver Bear for Best Director, Silver Bear for Best Screenplay, and Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance, Hong was the only male at the awards ceremony.

When Hong was asked about how he felt about this, he said, "I didn't know that. Was I the only man?," adding, "I don't want to give a new meaning to it."
