SEOUL, May 3 (Yonhap) -- In tvN's weekend drama, "Vincenzo," actor Kwak Dong-yeon (24), plays Jang Han-seo, the chairman of the conglomerate Babel Group who is more vicious than the mafia. After the drama has ended, the actor has been gaining approving reviews from the audience.
During an online interview with Yonhap, actor Kwak Dong-yeon said, "Jang Han-seo is a person who wants to obey his brother and get out of a very oppressed situation, but is barely supporting his life by being a chairman."
"I didn't want Han-seo to appear as a hateful character. I wanted him to have at least some compassion from the audience, but as I followed the writer and director's settings, I naturally came out as a charming character," he added.
Asked about how villain Jang Han-seo was loved by the audience, actor Kwak Dong-yeon picked 'ignorance' as his reason.
"I think my character started to be adored when he showed his foolish side.," explained Kwak Dong-yeon. "I think I was attracted to the role because my character had this type of personality to him."
Despite his young age, Kwak Dong-yeon received favorable reviews of his performance through "Vincenzo."
However the actor rated his performance as "15 points out of 100. I felt like dust in comparison to my seniors when we were shooting the drama."
"I was in awe as to how Song Joong-ki always took care of me. I want to be like him someday. When I looked at actress Kim Yeo-jin, I learned how to pay attention to the details and through actor Jo Han-chul, I was able to observe his quick wit and experience in acting."
This year, actor Kwak Dong-yeon marks his 10th year in the acting business.
"When I was young, I wanted to be the main character as soon as possible, however overtime, that thought naturally disappeared," Kwak Dong yeon said. "When I choose a role for a drama or film, I first think about the characters I want to play and ones I have to do. I prefer new and unique characters rather than typical characters I often see in Korean dramas."
After 10 years of his debut, the actor is well known for writing an acting journal while filming. "I don't write in my journal every day like I did before, but I write when I'm very impressed, when I find my area of weakness, or if I'm motivated by someone," the 24-year-old actor stated.
Additionally, Kwak said, "After working with the best writers, directors, and seniors, I realize that I have worked hard enough to earn this opportunity. However, I'm planning to become an improved actor who works much harder."
The actor's next film is "6/45," a story about South and North Korean soldiers that happens due to a winning lottery ticket that flies North due to the wind.
"There's only one reason I'm joined this movie--it's because the film is hilarious. It's different from Vincenzo, but I hope this movie can be some help to many people during this difficult time (laughs)."
