SEOUL, June 20 (Yonhap) -- The Hyundai Motor Chung Mong-koo Foundation (Chairman Kwon Oh-gyu) announced on Monday that it has been supporting pianist Yunchan Lim (18, Korea National University of Arts), who became the youngest winner of the world-famous American Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, for two years.

Since 2020, the foundation has been supporting Yunchan Lim by selecting him as the foundation's “OnDream Scholarship Growth Program.” At that time, Yunchan Lim was homeschooling after graduating the middle school course in Yewon School, with the highest grade.

In accordance with the philosophy of Chung Mong-koo, the founder of the foundation, “students with skills and talents should not give up on their dreams due to economic difficulties.” Thus, only those in the 7th or lower income quintile is able to apply.

Since 2011, the foundation has been selecting and supporting talents in the arts and culture field, and this year, they selected 40 students in the classic (piano, vocal music, string quartet, wind instrument), Gugak (Korean traditional music) and dance (ballet, contemporary dance) field through audition.

The foundation provides scholarship students with full tuition and living expenses of 1.8 million won per semester.

Also, like Yunchan Lim, when one participates in an international competition, the person will receive 2.5 million won for travel expenses, and will be given a reward of 3 million won if the person gets to win.

There is also an opportunity to participate in the “OnDream Ensemble” for scholarship students majoring in classical music. Through this program, the scholarship students can receive an opportunity to learn and participate in music camps and concerts, the foundation explained.

The total number of scholarship students in the field of culture and art that the foundation has supported so far is 2,028, and the amount of support amounts to 9.2 billion won.

Meanwhile, Yuchan Lim will perform with the Korean National Symphony Orchestra at the foundation's “Gyechon Classic Festival” held in Gyechon Village, Pyeongchang county, Gangwon province on August 27.
