SEOUL, Oct. 10 (Yonhap) — As the temperature dropped sharply on Monday, the first hoarfrost of this fall was formed at Deogyusan National Park in Muju-gun, Jeollabuk province.

Hoarfrost is also called “tree frost” as small ice is formed on tree branches when clouds containing warm water vapor are supercooled due to subzero temperatures.

According to the Jeonju Meteorological Office, the temperature in the area around Seolcheonbong Peak in Deogyusan National Park fell below freezing around 8 a.m. Monday.

As a result, the water vapor in the atmosphere cooled and made hoarfrost on tree branches.

Hoarfrost is formed in mid-Oct.and late spring in Deogyusan National Park, which has an elevation of over 1,400m above sea level and a ridge of 17km.
