SEOUL, Apr. 15 (Yonhap) -- K-pop stars, including the red-hot rookie group Fifty Fifty and supergroup BTS’ Jimin, are maintaining their presence on the world’s two most prestigious music charts, the U.S. Billboard and U.K.’s Official Singles Chart.
Per the British chart on Friday (local time), Fifty Fifty’s breakout debut single “CUPID” scored 34th place, going up 27 notches from last week. The group’s “CUPID” has been maintaining its presence on the chart for three consecutive weeks since it made its debut in 96th place.
“CUPID” is the main track off the quartet’s first single album, “The Beginning: Cupid,” released in February. It is a retro-style synth-pop song with an easy melody, minimal disco beats, and funky bass sound unlike the typical music style of K-pop groups that features rough and intense sounds, as well as a simple and repetitive chorus to hook listeners.
Behind its unexpected rise in overseas music markets was the song’s viral popularity on social media. They include TikTok, a well-known platform for short videos where sped-up versions of existing songs are thriving. During a press conference that was previously held to mark its entry into the U.S. Billboard’s Hot 100, the group said, “It is a synth-pop that is easy to listen to and feel clotty, which we believe is why we received some welcoming reactions from the overseas markets.”
Meanwhile, “Like Crazy,” the solo debut single of BTS’ Jimin, sat in 38th place, sliding down 22 notches from last week. Additionally, BLACK PINK’s Jisoo’s solo debut single “Flower” scored in 91st place, down 53 notches.
