'Daegu International Opera Festival' to kick off with opening opera 'Turandot'

SEOUL September 24, (Yonhap) -- 19th Daegu International Opera festival will kick off on September 23 and will continue on with its journey until November 19.

Throughout this year’s festival, pieces by world famous Italian composers, Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi, Giacomo Puccini, Gioacchino Antonio Rossini, German composer Wilhelm Richard Wagner, Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and more will be showcased.

The opening opera will be the epic “Turandot” by the Italian composer Giacomo Puccini. It will be played on September 23 and 24. It will be a collaborative piece by Daegu Opera house and Gwangju symphony orchestra.

Opera “Turandot” is about ancient princess Turandot of Beijing China known for her brutality and callousness and prince Calaf who goes on three quests to win her love.

Princess Turandot will be played by South Korean soprano singer Lee Yoon-jung, and Kim Ra-hee, and prince Calaf will be played by South Korean tenor Yoon Byung-kil and Lee Jung-hwan.

The second piece will be by Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, “Don Giovanni” which will be played on September 7 and 8.

“Don Giovanni” was selected as one of the greatest operas by New York Times due to is magnificent music and artistic features.

Moreover, German composer Wilhelm Richard Wagner’s “ Das Rheingold,“ “Die Walküre,“ “Siegfried Helferich,” and “Götterdämmerung” will be showcased throughout the festival, and Italian composer Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi’s “La traviata” and more will also be showcased throughout the festival.

The closing opera is selected as be the South Korean composer Yun I-sang’s opera “Sim Tjong.” Which will be performed on November 18 and 19.

Opera “Sim Tjon” which uses very commonly known narrative of South Korea was commissioned to composer Yun I-sang by the head director of BayerischeStaatsoper in celebration of München Olympic in 1972. Opera “Sim Tjong” was last performed in 1999 therefore it will be the first performance of opera “Sim Tjong” in 23 years.
