SEOUL, Oct. 14 (Yonhap) -- The hit children’s video “Baby Shark Dance,” featuring the beloved character Baby Shark, has surpassed 16 billion views on YouTube, maintaining its No. 1 position for 59 consecutive months, its producer The Pinkfong Company said Tuesday.

To mark the character’s 10th anniversary, the company released a special video highlighting its achievements.

Debuting in 2015 as part of Pinkfong’s nursery rhyme series, “Baby Shark Dance” sparked a global phenomenon, reaching audiences in 244 countries and 25 languages.

The Pinkfong Company said the view count is equivalent to the world’s population watching the video twice.

YouTube described Baby Shark as “a prime example of how creators can connect with global communities and evolve into cultural icons through the platform.”

It attributed the song’s success to several factors: its rapid global spread via YouTube, its repetitive melody and easy-to-follow dance, over 100,000 user-generated videos such as the “#BabySharkChallenge,” and its family-friendly content.

According to the company, U.S. viewers ranked first in total views and connected TV watch time, Brazil led in “likes,” and Indonesia recorded the longest mobile viewing time.

The Baby Shark TV series and feature film were nominated in three categories at last year’s International Emmy Children & Family Awards. The song also spent 20 weeks on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart and surpassed 1 billion streams on Spotify.

Gautam Anand, YouTube’s vice president for the Asia-Pacific region, said, “The 10-year journey of Baby Shark proves how content can connect people worldwide and create a foundation for global business growth.”
