SEOUL, April 29 (Yonhap) -- Singer and actor Lee Seung-gi announced Tuesday that he will sever ties with his in-laws following fresh legal issues involving his father-in-law.
In a statement, Lee said, "Although my father-in-law had previously received a fine in a retrial over existing allegations, he has recently been indicted again for similar illegal activities. It is heartbreaking."
He added, "The trust between our families has been irreparably damaged. After much deliberation, my wife and I have decided to cut ties with my in-laws."
Previously, Lee had defended his in-laws against media criticism regarding alleged stock manipulation. However, he appears to have changed his position following the Supreme Court ruling and a subsequent new indictment.
"I deeply regret speaking rashly without thoroughly reviewing the situation," he said. "I sincerely apologize to any victims who may have been hurt by my premature remarks."
Lee married actress Lee Da-in, daughter of veteran actress Kyeon Mi-ri, in 2023. Kyeon’s husband, Mr. Lee, had been convicted of manipulating stock prices at a KOSDAQ-listed company between 2014 and 2016 and was found guilty by the Supreme Court.
