'Surprise Treasure Hunt' event in Iksan ends short in chaos

SEOUL November 02 (Yonhap) -- Local government’s impractical way of hosting an event which led to injured participants was revealed lately.

According to the North Jeolla province on Wednesday, “Surprise treasure hunt” was held at the Iksan Jewelry Industrial Complex on October 29.

Treasure hunt event which offered grand prizes of 2 carat diamond and various jewelries asked participants to bring small slips so that they can enter the draw of the grand prize.

Event was held at a decently sized area and security guards were properly placed, however, the way participants were guided to find the hidden treasure became a problem.

According to a video documented during the event, facilitator throws numerous treasure slips in the air.

Participants who rushed towards the slip crashed into one another, which led some of the participants to scream.

One of the participants in their 60s fell to the ground after severe entanglement with other participants; therefore he was rushed into the hospital shortly after his fall.

Some of the participations at the events posted comments such as “I don’t understand why they would host an event like that,” “I won’t be able to bring my kids to the events” and more through social media questioning the method of hosting the event.

The committee addressed that they will examine all the comments they have received in order to provide safer events for people to participate in the future

“Surprise Treasure Hunt” event which kicked off on October 29 was canceled due to the unfortunate tragedy happened in Itaewon on the night of the Halloween.
