SEOUL, April 16 (Yonhap) -- Director Yi Seung-jun, who was nominated for an Academy Award for the first time in the history of the Korean documentary with "In The Absence," a documentary based on the Sewol Ferry disaster, is releasing a new documentary called "Geudaega Cho Kuk" or "The Red Herring," based on the controversy of the "Cho Kuk scandal (Former Minister of Justice of South Korea, Cho Kuk was involved in a series of controversies including allegations of illicit business activities and falsification of academic achievements of his daughter)."
The production company announced on the 14th that the documentary directed by Yi, "The Red Herring," will be officially released on the 1st of May after it has been screened at the Jeonju International Film Festival for the first time.
"The Red Herring," depicts the 67 days of Cho Kuk's life from being appointed as Minister of Justice to his resignation in 2019.
"It deals with what we saw when the prosecution, which lost justice was on a brutal hunt. And the question is whether we can be confident that the old portrait of power that promotes oblivion and reverses the direction of democracy, resistance to reform, and the blade of the prosecution are not directed at us" the production company introduced.
"This film will not be a judgement about the 'Cho Kuk scandal.' In fact, it deals with the things that the media and the powerful prosecutors tried to cover up and also seeks the questions and directions that they have tried to erase." Director Yi said. "To do this, we plan to revisit the period from August to October 2019."
The meaning of the title is that anyone can become a victim of repeated prosecution investigations with similar patterns. In fact, the English title, "The Red Herring" has the dictionary meaning of "a fact, idea, or subject that takes people's attention away from the central point being considered."
Director Yi's "In The Absence," a 29 minute documentary unfolding the Sewol Ferry disaster was nominated in the documentary short subject category for the 2020 Academy awards and also won the grand jury prize in the 2018 DOC NYC, an annual documentary film festival in New York City.
