SEOUL November 01 (Yonhap) -- “Rock carved Buddha in Yeoramgok Valley” also known as the “Miracle of 5cm” which has gotten its name from the fall it survived with only 5cm to spare will be going under procedure to relocate it back to where it belong.
Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism hosted ceremony which encompasses their motivation and dedication to relocate the “Rock Carved Buddha in Yeoramgok Valley” On October 31.
Head of the Finance and Account Office, mayor of Gyeongju, Joo Nak-young, and more authorities participated at the event.
“Rock carved Buddha in Yeoramgok Valley” was first discovered when the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage researchers were studying the “Stone Seated Buddha in Yeoramgok Valley, Gyeongju” inorder to proceed with the restoration process in May 22, of 2007.
Out of nearly 100 of the Buddhist statues left within Namsan Mountain located in Gyeongju South Korea, “Rock Carved Buddha in Yeoramgok Valley” drew a lot of attention for having less than 5cm gap between the Buddha’s pointy nose and the rock.
When first discovered Cultural Heritage Administration showcased their intention of lifting the “Rock carved Buddha in Yeoramgok Valley” so that it can be back at the original place.
However, the rock consists of 80t and the location of its fall is located within the middle of a steep hill, therefore Cultural Heritage Administration was having hard time coming up with an ideal plan.
Face and nose part of the statue lies very close to the rock wall, therefore if anything goes wrong, or throughout the process anything gets slipped off, the statue will be damaged, given the placement of the statue, it is very hard to bring in the equipments.
Therefore the Cultural Heritage Association set up a protective fence post around the “Rock carved Buddha in Yeoramgok Valley” and cleaned out the surroundings.
However, opinions about placing the “Rock carved Buddha in Yeoramgok Valley” right side up, Gyeongju City government has outsourced researchers related to placement of “Rock carved Buddha in Yeoramgok Valley.”
After the executive branch of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism has been replaced, the current executive branch selected straightening of the “Rock carved Buddha in Yeoramgok Valley” as their first project.
After thorough investigation, on legal, technical issues, they plan to start a nationwide campaign to not only get donation but also to draw the attention.
“Fall of the cultural asset which is over 1200 years old, does not make any sense,” adding “Straightening the ‘Rock carved Buddha in Yeoramgok Valley’ will serve as an opportunity to protect the pride and bring the national fortune.” addressed head of the finance and account office of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism.
