SEOUL, September 2 (Yonhap) -- Exhibition of Marco Lodola, known as the founder of Italy’s Neo Futurism, will be held in Seoul DDP from Sept.5 to Oct.9.
The exhibition, hosted by the Seoul Design Foundation, the Italian Embassy in Korea, and the Italian Cultural Center in Korea and sponsored by the Italian artist group Mirabilis, 40 representative works of the artist will be display.
Marco Roddola is an Italian comtemporary artist. He is also called an “artist of light,” for mainly using neon and LED tubes for his artworks, and has been actively collaborating with world-class companies such as Swatch, Ferrari, and Dior.
Neo-futurism is a movement that arose from the late 20th century to the early 21st century to pursue new things in the fields of art, design, and architecture. It is characterized by future-oriented thinking about the aesthetics and functionality of design of growing cities.
An official from the foundation said, “Neo-futurism in the field of architecture in the 21st century also inspired architect Zaha Hadid,“ adding, It’s meaningful that Neo-futurism is held at DDP which Hadid designed.”
The exhibition consists of four themes: ▲ dance and music ▲ pop art reinterpretation of Renaissance art ▲ pin-up and card section ▲ Vespa and Italian lifestyle.
The works are sculptures made of aluminum and LED tubes, plexiglass (acrylic resin), with shining pieces and neon from acrylic attached.
The artist completed a unique pop-art-style work using lights, wires and plastics for faceless ballerinas, sports stars, pop culture icons, and musicians. The light in the artist's work represents a wish for a bright future.
The artist said, “The 'light' in my work reminds of a neon sign that brights a future-oriented Seoul nightm and purses change and development,” adding, “I am happy to introduce Italy’s modern art to Koreans through this exhibition.”
