Musical 'The Rachmaninoff' to kick off in April

SEOUL March 3 (Yonhap) -- In order to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of the representing figure with the music history, Rachmaninoff “Musical Rachmaninoff” will kick off on April.

The National Museum Foundation addressed on Friday, that “Musical Rachmaninoff” will kick off at the theater Yong located within the National Museum in Yongsan district, Seoul starting on April 1 until 22.

The upcoming musical depicts the genius Russian pianist Rachmaninoff, and the slump he went through during his life time.

After finishing up his first symphony Rachmaninoff fell into a slump due to criticisms he received regarding his work, as a result Rachmaninoff meets a psychiatrist Nikolai Dahl and it takes 3 years for Rachmaninoff to recover from his slump.

The synergy showcased by two of the actors who act out Rachmaninoff and Nikolai Dahl throughout the musical with beautiful piano melody in the background is considered one of the things to look out for throughout the performance.

Especially towards the middle of the musical where Rachmaninoff is trying to overcome his slump, the track “Need to Write,” and “Inferiority” featured within the musical uses Rachmaninoff’s “Piano Concerto 3” which is well known to the public.

The “Musical Rachmaninoff” which was first performed in 2016 was awarded with Screen Play Award from Yegreen Musical Award, and was awarded with the composition and music director’s award from Korea Musical Awards.

Throughout the upcoming musical, South Korean musical actors Park Yoo-deok, Ahn Jae-young, Jung Wook-jin will be acting out Rachmaninoff throughout the musical.

Moreover, actors Jung Min, Kim Kyung-soo Lim Byung-geun, Jung Dong-hwa and more will act out the psychiatrist Nikolai Dahl.

Mayor Kim Yong-sam addressed “In order to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Rachmaninoff, we have brought up a high class musical where audience will be able to see the life of a gifted pianist Rachmaninoff,” adding “This upcoming musical will be able to entertain both musical lovers and classical music lovers.”
