SEOUL, May 2 (Yonhap) -- Sanggodae (White winter frosts) were seen at Seolcheonbong Peak and Hyangjeokbong Peak in Deokyusan National Park on the 2nd, creating a wonderful scenery.

At dawn that day, the minimum temperature dropped to minus 1.7 degrees Celsius, had a high humidity of 100% and had winds blowing to about 10 m/s, making Sanggodae on the branches of new shoots.

Sanggodae is formed on tree branches when the clouds containing the warm water vapor are supercooled at the low temperature.

With Deokyusan National Park having a high altitude of 1,400m above sea level and a highland of 17km, Sanggodae is formed even in early winter and late spring.

"The last Sanggodae was formed on May 2nd, just like last year," said Kang Seong-min, head of administration at Deokyusan National Park. "As much as the temperature of the highlands keep on changing, it is necessary to prepare safety hiking equipment such as a windshield and raincoat even in summer."
