SEOUL, Apr. 21 (Yonhap) -- South Korean actor Song Joong-ki, who recently received a welcoming invitation from the Cannes International Film Festival with his forthcoming movie “Hwaran,” said, “It is such an honor to present our fiery work to the international audience.”
“‘Hwaran’ has been produced by cast and crew with zeal and zest,” the 37-year-old said. “I am very honored and excited to be attending the Cannes.”
Song also added, “When I first read the scenario, I was super excited when I thought I could soon share the cathartic experience that I had with the audience. As it is a festival for filmmakers, I will enjoy the fest to its fullest.”
“Hwaran” marks director Kim Chang-hoon’s debut feature-length film, which has been invited to the festival’s “Un Certain Regard” category that showcases original and aesthetically accomplished films.
It is the first time in 15 years that Song has been invited to Cannes since his screen debut with the erotic period film “The Frozen Flower.” In this upcoming noir film, Song suits up as the mid-level crime boss named Chi-geon, who made his way through the hellish world in his own way. Budding actor Hong Sa-bin has been confirmed to star as Yeon-kyu, a young boy who wishes to escape from his own miserable reality, while singer-songwriter BIBI, whose real name is Kim Hyung-seo, is set to star as Yeon-kyu’s younger sister Ha-yan.
In regards to his screen debut film receiving an invitation, Hong Sa-bin said, “I am beyond grateful and honored to be with such a wonderful cast in this wonderfully produced film.”
Meanwhile, BIBI shared her thoughts, saying, “It feels like I am benefitting from what director Kim, Song Joong-ki, and Hong Sa-bin have done, but I am also very grateful.”
The detailed premiere schedule for Song’s action-noir film “Hwaran,” meaning disaster or chaos, is yet to be confirmed.
