SEOUL, Jan. 8 (Yonhap) – South Korean girl group NewJeans has appeared in a video promoting Hanji's excellence and became a target of Chinese "malicious" netizens.

NewJeans has appeared in a promotional video of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Crafts and Design Foundation’s "Planning and development of Korean Wave-related collaborative content in 2022 - Hanji" released on Friday, according to the music industry on Sunday.

In the video, the members of NewJeans talks about the long history of Hanji and its excellent durability and functionality. They also has an experience of making Hanji themselves with Ahn Chi Young, head of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage Association.

Although the video was focused on Korean paper Hanji, not the process of papermaking, netizens believed to be Chinese flocked to NewJeans’ SNS and expressed displeasure, saying, "China is the first country to make paper."

One netizen wrote in Chinese, "Paper technology was invented in China and spread to various parts of the world," adding, "Hanji is completely ridiculous."

Another netizen also commented in Chinese, "When there was Wang Hee-ji, a calligrapher from Dongjin Dynasty in China, Pao Cai country didn’t even exist." Pao Cai is a pickled food in Sichuan, China, and traditional Korean side dish kimchi is labeled Pao Cai in China.
