'Pachinko' attracts tourists in Busan

SEOUL, Apr. 29 (Yonhap) -- Scenes showing the past and present of Busan, including the coastal waters of Yeongdo and Jagalchi Market, were introduced to more than 100 countries around the world through the drama "Pachinko."


"Pachinko" is an 8-episode drama based on the novel of the same name by the Korean-American writer Lee Min-jin.

Pachinko depicts the tumultuous life of a Korean immigrant family living in Japan between the 1910s and the 1980s.

The series is gaining lots of attention with the Academy Award-winning actress Yoon Yuh-jung and Hallyu star Lee Min-ho starring, and has also been enjoying favorable reviews from critics around the world.

"Pachinko," produced and distributed to OTT (over-the-top media service) by Apple TV+ is being serviced in more than 100 countries.

Yeongdo, Busan is the hometown of the main character, "Seon-ja."

Busan is a major place that leads the story of the series.

In the series, a lot of places in Busan including the Yeongdo Beach and Jagalchi Market comes out.

According to the Busan Film Commission on the 29th, the production team of "Pachinko" gathered 200 domestic and foreign staffs in November 2020 to film in Busan for 6 days.

Along with Yeongdo, there are 10 other shooting sites including Jagalchi Market, Beomildong gureumdari (cloud bridge), Gamji beach, Dong nae byel jang, Yeongdo-gu office, Centum city station, Bexco, taejongdae and Yeongnak park.

The offshore of Yeongdo, where the young "Seon-ja" used to work, is depicted as a place where the old "Seon-ja" comes back and dips her feet again, bursting into tears.

On the other hand, Jagalchi market comes out as a place where the young Seon-ja recalls her happy childhood.

With the drama becoming popular, the areas around these locations including Taejongdae has been gaining interests among the tourists.

"The pachinko production team requested the location where they wanted to shoot through thorough historical research on the location," Yang Young-joo, head of the Busan Film Commissions video business team said. "Although there was COVID-19, the filming went on well with the helps from the related organizations."

During the filming scene in Taejongdae when "Seonja" was working, 7 organizations including the Busan Infrastructure Cooperation, Korea Coast Guard, Yeongdo Police station, Busan Port Authority, and Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries actively cooperated.

"With Pachinko being available to a 100 countries, I believe that the history and image of Busan depicted in the series will be naturally engraved to the people around the world, greatly contributing to the strengthening of the city's brand," said Kim In-soo, chairman of the Busan Film Commission.

Season 1 of "Pachinko" ends today with episode 8.
