SEOUL, July 8 (Yonhap) -- Actress Lee Si-young revealed Tuesday that she is expecting her second child through the implantation of a frozen embryo created via in-vitro fertilization (IVF) during her marriage to her ex-husband — without his consent.

In a post shared on social media, Lee wrote, “During my marriage, I underwent IVF treatment in preparation for a second child. However, a long time passed without the embryo ever being implanted, and naturally, conversations about divorce also began.”

She continued, “As our legal relationship was coming to an end, the expiration of the five-year embryo storage period approached. Faced with the deadline for disposal, I made the decision to proceed with implantation myself.”

Lee added, “Although my former partner did not agree with the decision, I intend to take full responsibility for the choice I made.”

The actress married a restaurateur nine years her senior in 2017 and gave birth to a son. In March of this year, it was made public that the couple had ended their marriage after eight years.

“I have always wanted more children,” Lee said. “With the storage period nearing its end, I simply couldn’t bring myself to discard the embryo. Even during a marriage that wasn’t always easy, what helped me endure was having this angelic child who filled me with joy, hope, and wonder.”

“I am now deeply grateful for this new life that has come to me,” she added. “I’m spending some of the most peaceful and happy days I’ve had. Going forward, I will humbly accept any criticism or advice with a grateful heart.”
