SEOUL, Jan. 7 (Yonhap) -- The music video of S. Korean singer PSY's global hit "Gangnam Style" has steadily gained popularity online and it has been a craze for more than a decade.
According to his agency P NATION on Jan. 7, the number of views on YouTube for the music video exceeded 4.3 billion the previous day.
"Gangnam Style,” which was released in July, 2012, is the title song of PSY's 6th full album "Psy 6 (Six Rules), Part 1," which gained popularity as its comical music video and unique "horse dance" went viral.
The song had risen to the second place on the U.S. Billboard's main single chart “Hot 100,” which was considered as a "barrier” to K-pop singers at the time.
The music video, which is regarded as an engine for success, has broken many records so far.
The music video surpassed 1 billion views in 161 days since the video's release, and it is the first time that a single video has exceeded 1 billion views since the creation of YouTube.
Since then, the video has surpassed 2 billion views for the first time in YouTube history in May, 2014, and has continued to record more than 3 billion views and 4 billion views respectively, in November, 2017 and March, 2021.
PSY will release the 9th full album this year to meet his fans again.
PSY said in a live performance at SBS' year-end special "All-Night Stand" at the end of last year, "I will release the 9th album no matter what happens next year."
