SEOUL, August 27 (Yonhap) — NewJeans’ agency ADOR on saturday has spoken out about the controvery regarding the lyrics of song “Cookie” by NewJeans.
Adorethrough the official website said, "The expression ‘Bake a cookie’ in the song means ‘bake a CD,’ and this song is based on a beat that is not commonly tried by girl groups. It symbolizes a new challenge that the company is trying.”
The agency continued, “ ‘Cookie’ shows humbleness by expressing the song itself as a dessert rather than a main food, but it also expresses the confidence that it can outdo the main,” adding, “It implies NewJean’s musical value and challenge for newness.”
Adore pointed out that this kind was conveyed through the music video: Cookies appear in the first scene of the music video, but it is replaced with a CD in the last scene.
Along with the debut, NewJeans gained popularity with their title song “Attention,” which topped in various music charts and won various music programs.
But some pointed out that the key of the song, “Cookie” could be interpreted as a sexual metaphor.
In relation to this uncomfortable issue, Adore said that it has confirmed that its sexual meaning is not commonly used, after undergoing a number of tests, including interpreter and translation experts with ph.D in English Literature, native English speakers, and ordinary foreigners.
Adore also said, "Based on the context, intentions, and sincerity of our words, please do not make unnecessary doubts and enjoy the goodwill of our content that we sincerly prepared."
Adore plans to make Twitter account for each members and release various contents and photos soon.
Adore also revealed that they have their planning intention as the songs follow in the order of “Attention.” “Hype Boy,” “Cookie,” and “Hurt.” According to the flow of these songs, they depicted the relationship between supplier and consumer, artist and fan.
