SEOUL, Mar. 3 (Yonhap) -- Netflix Korea has removed South Korean actor Yoo Ah-in, currently under police investigation for habitual use of four illegal drug substances, from the sequel to its hit original series “Hellbound.”
The mega-hit original dark fantasy series, based on the webtoon of the same name, follows the supernatural phenomenon in which “unearthly beings” deliver condemnations, sending individuals to hell and giving rise to a religious group founded on the idea of divine justice. The series received rave reviews for throwing out some heavy questions by featuring a religious sect that revived in the midst of chaos and those who chase after the truth.
In the first season, Yoo played the role of Jung Jin-soo, the cult leader who conceals his sentence to hell to follow the doctrine of his cult. The sequel is expected to follow the story of Park Jung-ja (Kim Shin-rok) and Jung Jin-soo (Yoo Ah-in), who were previously sentenced to hell but then resurrected.
Amid the ongoing drug scandal, Yoo will be replaced by Kim Sung-cheol, who recently garnered international attention for his roles in “Our Beloved Summer” and “Do You Like Brahms?.” Veteran actors Yang Dong-geun and Moon Geun-young will also be joining the sequel, which will begin shooting in June.
The series will see Yang as the leader of a religious sect that helps victims who have been sentenced to hell; Moon will play the role of another fanatic cult leader, also dubbed the “Sunshine Class,” along with actor Cho Dong-in who will appear as a co-leader with the alias “Pinwheel.”
The cast from the first season, including Kim Hyun-joo, Kim Shin-rok, Lee Dong-hee, Yang Ik-joon, and Lee Re, will continue to play their roles in the forthcoming sequel.
