Natural monuments, seeds of 176 old giant trees preserved at National Baekdudaegan Arboretum

SEOUL, April 19 (Yonhap) -- Among the state-designated cultural property and natural monument, 176 seeds of the old, giant trees are permanently preserved at the Seed Vault of the National Baekdudaegan Arboretum, located in Bonghwa, North Gyeongsang Province.

It announced on the 19th that it would sign an agreement with the Korea Arboreta and Gardens Institute on the 20th for a joint research on the responds to climate change and to exchange information on animal and plant genetic resources.

A Seed Vault is a seed storage facility which is created to preserve plant resources from various disasters.

The two organizations plans to promote the issuance of Non-fungible token (NFTs) for plant seed drawings using the Scanning electron microscope and cooperate in the publication of the storybook, "Dangsan Grandfather."

"Natural Monuments including Yulgokmae in Okjuheon House, Gangneung and Damyang Gwanbangjerim Forest have suffered due to climate change," an official from the Cultural Heritgae Administration said. "We will come up with a variety of policies to preserve the value of the cultural heritage."
