'Escape from Mogadishu' wins Best Orient Express Film award at Fantasporto International Film Festival

SEOUL, Apr. 13 (Yonhap) – The movie “Escape from Mogadishu”(2021), directed by Ryoo Seung-wan, has been awarded the Best Orient Express Film at the 42nd Fantasporto International Film Festival in Portugal.

According to the distributing company Lotte Entertainment on Wednesday, “Escape from Mogadishu” took home an honor of being awarded the Best Orient Express Film at the film festival, which ended on Apr. 10(KST).

“Escape from Mogadishu” is about a life-and-death escape by South and North Korean diplomats during the Somali civil war in the 1990s.

Rio Dominski, the executive director of the film festival, evaluated, “The story of violence caused by uncertainty leads to light," adding, “The inhumane conflict in Somalia recovers its original state through the story of the escape and salvation of ‘Escape from Mogadishu.’”

Director Ryoo said, “We are not free from war even at this moment. I hope our movie can help making this world more peaceful,” adding, “I sincerely hope the war in Ukraine comes to an end.”

Director Yoon Jong-seok of “Confession,” which is ahead of its release in Korea, won the Best Director award.

The film depicts the story of a lawyer who has been named a suspect of a murder case in the sealed room and his lawyer approaching the truth. S. Korean actors So Ji-sub, Kim Yun-jin, and Nana star in the movie.

Director Yoon said, “I can’t believe that the movie has received favorable reviews abroad even before it was released in Korea,” adding, “I hope the international film scene can become active again so we can meet a lot of audiences."

The Fantasporto International Film Festival is one of the world's renowned fantastic film festivals, featuring genre films, such as fantasy, science fiction, horror, and thriller.
