SEOUL, Dec. 19 (Yonhap) -- A year after the artist Kang Seok-ho (1971-2021) died in an unexpected accident last year, an exhibition spotlighting on his paintings and design collections has opened at the Seosomun Main Hall of the Seoul Museum of Art.
Kang Seok-ho has been working on editing objects in his own style and drawing them with a completely different image, such as cutting out elements that can characterize objects in in daily life.
His leading work "Clothes" series, which began in 1999 and continued until just before, highlights a part of clothing that reveals the body curve of a person. Paintings that focused on elements such as patterns, wrinkles, and colors of clothing give a landscape-like sentiment.
The "Gesture" series, which focuses on gestures of people in current affairs magazine, the "Couple" series, which highlights certain parts of person in the couple photo, the "Nude" series, which focuses on skin color and touch of the surface rather than the amount of the body, and the most recent series, "Rubicube" series show his world view of work.
There is also a space that showcase aspects of Kang Seokho Kang as a collector of design furniture. Interested in the Bauhaus movement when he studied in Germany, he collected modern design furniture and made furniture such as chairs and shelves by himself. His interest in the Bauhaus movement, which highlights practicality and artistry, is in line with the artist's works which discovered beauty by looking at everyday objects with new eyes. The exhibition introduces about 60 pieces of furniture collected or made by him as if they were parts of artist's room.
Lee Eun-joo, a guest curator who organized the exhibition, said, "It's too early to analyze the art history of the artist considering that this year is just the first year since Kang's death," adding, "This exhibition is to spread the inspiration to those who were inspired by Kang before they disappeared."
Director of the Seoul Museum of Art, Baek Ji-sook,said, "I hope this exhibition will be an opportunity to reminisce artist Kang Seok-ho and become the foundation to research more about him ."
"Untitled," which is a collection of essays, novels, and poems written by the artist along with information on this exhibition will be published next Feb.
The exhibition will take place until next March 19. Free entrance.
