Gov't unveils 3-point strategy for tourism innovation

By Lee Haye-ah

SEOUL, Sept. 25 (Yonhap) -- The government on Thursday unveiled a three-point strategy for tourism innovation that centers on developing new tourism hubs outside the capital area and providing incentives for domestic travel.

The strategy was announced following the 10th national tourism strategy meeting, which is made up of the prime minister as chair and the heads of 13 ministries.

"This year, as we are hosting the APEC summit in Gyeongju, it is a golden opportunity to widely promote the strength of South Korea's culture, arts and content to the world," Prime Minister Kim Min-seok said during the meeting.

"The Lee Jae Myung administration will foster the culture and tourism industry of K-content into a core future strategic industry, and activate discussions across the government and in the private sector to produce tangible results," he added.

Under the new plan, the government aims to innovate inbound tourism and domestic tourism as well as the policy and industrial base.

In order to innovate inbound tourism, the government said it will select around two regions outside the capital area within the year and develop them into new tourism hubs rivaling Seoul and its surrounding cities.

Innovating domestic tourism will center on increasing travel discounts and encouraging "workations," while innovating the policy and industrial base will include revising outdated tourism laws and systems to meet the demands of the era of artificial intelligence.
