PM says gov't to look at ways to increase foreign workers in restaurant industry
By Lee Haye-ah
SEOUL, June 4 (Yonhap) -- Prime Minister Han Duck-soo said Tuesday the government will look at ways to allow more foreigners to work in the local food service industry.
Han made the remark during a meeting with reporters, saying rising labor costs have been a key factor behind the increase in the cost of dining out.
"We will review measures to allow the restaurant industry to hire foreign workers when necessary. Currently, it is quite limited," he said.
Han did not elaborate on details, saying the government needs to discuss the matter between relevant ministries and also gather public opinion.
He also said there is a "great lack of workers" not only in the food service industry but also at other small and medium-sized businesses and in rural areas.
"Over the long term, we will work to fill the labor force with Republic of Korea nationals, but in order to ease the difficulties of the current state, I think it would be right to hire foreign workers," he said.
