Senior Russian diplomat calls for S. Korea to rethink 'confrontational policy' on peninsula: TASS

By Song Sang-ho

WASHINGTON, June 26 (Yonhap) -- A senior Russian diplomat called Wednesday for South Korea to reconsider what he called a "confrontational" policy of "provoking an escalation of tensions" on the Korean Peninsula during a meeting with Seoul's top envoy to Moscow, according to a news report.

Russia's state media TASS reported that Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko made the call during his talks with South Korean Ambassador Lee Do-hoon, as diplomatic tensions between the two countries have risen following a recent summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

At their summit in Pyongyang last week, Putin and Kim signed a "comprehensive strategic partnership" treaty that included a clause committing each other to provide military assistance to the other side "without delay" in the event of an armed invasion.

"The authorities of the Republic of Korea were urged to reconsider the confrontational policy of provoking an escalation of tensions on the peninsula, and to take the path of finding effective ways of achieving reconciliation, peace and stability in Northeast Asia," TASS reported, citing a press release from Russia's foreign ministry.

The ministry also criticized as "inadmissible" recent remarks by senior South Korean officials on military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang.

South Korea, along with the United States, has criticized growing military cooperation between the North and Russia amid shared concerns about its implications for security on the Korean Peninsula and beyond.
