FM Cho stresses efforts for stable foreign relations in meeting with G7, EU envoys
By Kim Seung-yeon
SEOUL, Dec. 17 (Yonhap) -- Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul highlighted Tuesday that South Korea is striving to maintain stable foreign relations and uphold international trust amid political turmoil following the martial law debacle, his office said.
Cho made the point during a luncheon meeting with the envoys of the Group of Seven advanced countries and the European Union member states in Seoul, as South Korea seeks to reaffirm its continued diplomatic commitment after the short-lived martial law declaration by President Yoon Suk Yeol.
Yoon was impeached by the parliament Saturday and is suspended from his duties pending a Constitutional Court decision on whether to remove him from office or reinstate him. Prime Minister Han Duck-soo has taken over as the acting president.
Cho told the envoys that the government is focusing its efforts on "maintaining South Korea's foreign policy approach, managing foreign relations in a stable manner and retaining international trust in the face of growing uncertainties in international relations," the foreign ministry said.
Cho also explained efforts to smoothly carry out state affairs under Han's acting presidency.
The envoys, in turn, noted how they were able to witness South Korea's democratic resilience through the current crisis, according to the ministry.
Attending the meeting were the ambassadors and representatives of seven countries -- Britain, the United States, Canada, Germany, Japan, France and Italy -- and the European Union.
