Parliamentary probe into Yoon's martial law imposition set to kick off

By Yi Wonju

SEOUL, Dec. 31 (Yonhap) -- Rival political parties are set to kick off a parliamentary investigation Tuesday into President Yoon Suk Yeol's alleged insurrection attempt during his short-lived declaration of martial law.

A special parliamentary committee on the probe held its first meeting early Tuesday and came up with a 45-day probe plan to investigate the legality of a controversial Cabinet meeting held just before the martial law declaration and whether the military and police were mobilized to stop a parliamentary vote to lift it.

If the plan is approved at the National Assembly's plenary session later in the day, the committee will investigate government agencies related to the case until Feb. 13.

Government agencies subject to the investigation include the presidential office, Office of National Security, Presidential Security Service under the presidential office, Prime Minister's Office, Supreme Prosecutors Office, interior and justice ministries, police and National Intelligence Service.

The defense ministry and Defense Counterintelligence Command will also face investigation.
