Seoul shares up late Wed. morning on Wall Street gains

SEOUL, Feb. 5 (Yonhap) -- South Korean stocks rose over 1 percent late Wednesday morning in line with overnight gains on Wall Street.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) rose 25.66 points, or 1.03 percent, to 2,507.35 as of 11:20 a.m.

Overnight, Wall Street stocks were buoyed by eased concerns over trade following U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to pause impositions of tariffs on Canada and Mexico for a month,

The S&P 500 finished up 0.72 percent, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 0.30 percent. The Nasdaq composite added 1.35 percent.

In Seoul, most blue chips advanced, with market heavyweight Samsung Electronics up 0.76 percent and chipmaking rival SK hynix adding 2.77 percent.

Battery and automotive shares also advanced. LG Energy Solution climbed 3.15 percent and Hyundai Motor added 0.5 percent.

Kakao Bank jumped 7.04 percent after reporting record earnings, while internet technology service provider LG CNS, which made its stock market debut, plummeted 7.11 percent.

The local currency was trading at 1,455.20 won against the U.S. dollar at 11:20 a.m., up 13.75 won from the previous session.
