SEOUL, Jan. 9 (Yonhap) -- Netflix's "Squid Game" series has found itself in hot water as cast members repeatedly post problematic content on social media, with the latest incident sparking speculation about a potential Season 3 plot.
Actress Park Gyu-young ignited controversy on January 8 after uploading a photo from the "Squid Game 2" set to her personal SNS. The image depicted Park, in her character's signature dark pink uniform, reclining on a folding chair with a fatigued yet humorous expression.
The issue arose from the background of the photo, where another actor, also dressed in the iconic dark pink uniform associated with guards and workers in the series, was visible. Fans quickly speculated that the faintly visible face might belong to Lee Jin-wook, who plays contestant Park Kyung-seok in Season 2.
The theory has sparked debate, as Kyung-seok and Park's character, Noeul, are expected to share significant screen time in Season 2, with their relationship being a key storyline. Park previously hinted in an interview that "many questions about Noeul and Kyung-seok's connection will be addressed in Season 3."
Given that Season 2 reportedly ends with Kyung-seok's apparent death after being shot, the presence of Lee Jin-wook in the leaked photo would constitute a major spoiler. Following the uproar, Park Gyu-young swiftly deleted the post.
Netflix and Park’s agency declined to confirm or deny the speculation, merely stating, "Please wait for Season 3 for clarification."
This incident follows another mishap last month when actor Park Sung-hoon, who plays Hyun-joo in Squid Game 2, accidentally uploaded a parody adult film cover resembling Squid Game to his SNS. Park later explained that he intended to forward the image to a production team member to flag concerns but mistakenly posted it publicly.
Apologizing in a subsequent interview, Park said, "I deeply regret causing issues for a project that so many people have worked tirelessly on."
The back-to-back missteps have left fans buzzing, while Netflix remains tight-lipped, encouraging viewers to stay tuned for upcoming seasons.
