SEOUL, Apr. 19 (Yonhap) -- The third sequel of the South Korean action-crime franchise “Crime City,” starring Ma Dong-seok, will hit local theaters in the first half of this year.
This third film in the franchise, “The Roundup: No Way Out,” have been confirmed to be released anytime from May to June, distributors ABO Entertainment and Plus M Entertainment announced Tuesday.
The third installment of the record-breaking Crime City series, which kicked off with “The Outlaws,” will revolve around detective Ma Seok-do (played by Ma Dong-seok) once again, who joins a new crime investigation unit led by Jang Tae-soo (Lee Beom-soo). Ma will devise and carry out his perfect plan to go up against Joo Sung-cheol (Lee Joon-hyuk) and the Japanese yakuza Ricky (Munetaka Aoki), who have been involved in this distasteful drug crime case. Director Lee Sang-young, who directed both sequels, has taken the helm once again.
The Crime City series, which first hit the big screens in 2017, raked in a whopping 6.88 million admissions, becoming the third most-watched R-rated Korean film.
The second sequel, released last year, also amassed 12.6 million moviegoers despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, proving its worth as a true magnum opus and becoming a formidable crime-action series.
