SEOUL, Feb. 7 (Yonhap) -- Netflix has been welcoming an influx of its application (app) users in South Korea, which brought a surge in the total usage time, thanks to the recently released mega-hit revenge drama “The Glory,” starring South Korean actress Song Hye-kyo.

The number of Netflix app users in January this year reportedly reached an all-time high of 12.79 million, according to a sample survey of Korean smartphone users (Android and iOS) released by WiseApp, an app/retail analysis service.

Compared to the 11.16 million in Nov. of 2022 -- prior to the release of this original series that has been garnering both domestic and international attention --, the number of Netflix subscribers increased by 15% (1.63 million).

The total usage time of the streaming service also increased by 24% (900 million minutes), from 4 billion minutes last November to 4.9 billion minutes in Jan. of the new year.

However, when compared to 5.4 billion minutes of total usage time in January of last year, the time has decreased by about 9%.

“Since the COVID-19 social distancing rules started to be lifted in Apr., 2022, Netflix has been witnessing a decrease in its number of subscribers and usage time with more people going outdoors. However, both numbers rebounded mostly due to the release of several acclaimed contents, including ‘Reborn Rich’ and ‘The Glory,’” analyzed WiseApp.

The survey released by WiseApp covered a total of 51.2 million people, including 36.88 million Android users and 14.32 million iOS users; these numbers, however, have been statistically estimated, which implies that they may be subject to minor margins of error.
