BTS to compete at 65th Grammy Award

SEOUL October 26 (Yonhap) -- K-pop superstar BTS will be trying out for America’s most prize music award “Grammy Award” which will take place in February of 2023 once again.

Although the oldest of the group Jin’s enlistment to the South Korean army will put a hold to full member activities for at least 3 years, however, BTS will continue to challenge themselves to take another step forward.

◇BTS submits at least 4 of their tracks as the candidates

According to the music industry on Wednesday, minimum of four of the tracks by BTS has been submitted for the upcoming “65th Grammy Awards” which will happen in February of 2023.

Upcoming Grammy Award will consists of songs released between October 1 of 2021 (US time) and September 30 of 2022.

Once the artist or their agency submits the track under their intended segment, members of the Recording Academy goes through two rounds of anonymous voting to select the award winning record.

Over 80 segments exists within Grammy Awards, however the number of trophy given varies depending on the year. Out of all the sections, “Album of the Year,” “Record of the Year,” “Song of the Year,” and “Best New Artist” are considered “Big Four” (General Fields).

BTS submitted four of their track “Yet To Come,” from their anthology album proof released in June of 2022, collaborative track with Coldplay “My Universe,” collaborative track between Jungkook and Charlie Puth “Left and Right,” and “Bad Decision” under the segment of “Song of the Year.”

However, some of the collaborative tracks submitted under “Song of The Year” could have been registered from collaborated artist’s side.

As of “Album of the year” Grammy Award requires the released album to include at least 75 percent of newly tracks to be included within the album therefore due to the regulation BTS’ proof could not have been registered under the section.

Other than four of the tracks submitted under “General Fields” BTS was nominated under “Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.”

“Best Pop Duo Group Performance” is one of the finer Genre of Grammy Award, newly introduced in 2012. The award goes to duo or group or a collaborative form which showcased fabulous achievement.

BTS has a history of missing the title with their global phenomenon “Dynamite” and “Butter” which managed to compete against number of great tracks at the finals.

Moreover tracks such as “Yet To Come,” “Bad Decisions,” “Left and Right” known for their amazing music video has been submitted under the segment of “Best Music Video.”

◇ Official release of the candidates will happen in November… high hopes for “Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.”

First round of the voting for the upcoming 65th Grammy Award will happen between October 13 to 23. Those candidates selected from the first voting process will continue on to compete at further rounds, however being selected within those list of candidate is first obstacle to overcome.

Some of the critics describe BTS’ adventure for Grammy Music Award, somewhat positively, it is considered as it might not be easy however it is worth a shot.

BTS has continued on collaborating with world famous artists such as Snoop Dogg, Charlie Puth, and more therefore BTS might be able to win the “Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.”

A pop music critic, Kim Do-hun “BTS can be nominated as a candidate of ’Best Pop Duo/Group Performance’” adding “I think the collaborative track between BTS and Coldplay ‘My Universe’ has a chance.”

One of the tracks submitted as a candidate “My Universe” has topped billboards main single chart “Hot 100.”

However some critics point out the uncertainty based on how the group has released a single album which was their anthology album “Proof” and how it was in South Korea.

Another pop music critic Lim Jin-mo stated “Last Year BTS’ ‘Butter’ was nominated as one of the final candidates, however they have failed.” adding “Grammy Awards is considerably the greates music award given by the United States which has high standard in art and music, therefore it might be hard for BTS to win the award this year.”

Some mention how the committee of Grammy Award has been dismissed due to the closeness of the event, therefore now the candidates will be selected by the members instead of committee, therefore

Since numerous teams submit their recordings for initial voting process, which will lead to members of recording academy to listen and select the ones they are familiar with, in this case it would be “westernized tracks” therefore the judgment could get blurry after listening to hundreds of tracks.

Recording academy will released finalized candidates for the second round of voting on November 15 and from December 14 through January 4, the final voting will begin. The "65th Grammy Award" will take place in February 5 at crypto arena in Los Angeles United States.
